This 1,200 acre tract has everything you could ask for in a hunting property. Set up mostly for waterfowl this tract has abundant wildlife including whitetail deer, wild turkey, trophy black bear, wild pigs, predators, and small game as well. This tract is very diverse with farm land, pine plantations, and areas of dense pocosin that offers great habitat for all kinds of wildlife.
This property is perfectly located and borders Mattamuskeet Wildlife Refuge on the south and on the north border is in close proximity to the Pocosin Lakes Refuge and both the Pungo and Alligator Rivers. These areas winter large numbers of ducks, geese, and swans that come to this property to feed on the nearly 350 acres of corn and grain left just for waterfowl. There are also large areas on the north end the seller also floods just for sanctuary on the property itself that hold large numbers of ducks as well. It is not uncommon to see tens of thousands of birds when going in to hunt when the birds have made it down on there winter migration.
The property also has a great big game population including large numbers of trophy black bears that Hyde County is famous for. Some of the biggest black bears in the world come from this area. There is an 11,000 acre tract to the west of this property that is also known for great bear hunting and holds a lot of game that comes to this farm to feed on all the grain in the fields for the waterfowl. We have been running trail cameras on the property for several weeks now and have many bears on camera well over 600 lbs. The deer numbers are good as well. We also have great pictures of several nice bucks. One evening last week in a short drive through the property we saw at least twenty nice bucks and eight really nice, 8 pointers. The wild pig population continues to grow in Hyde County. Although the land owner tries to keep them in check, they offer great hunting and good table fare as well.
Along with all the other game mentioned this farm has a huge population of wild turkeys. The turkeys were introduced into Hyde County approximately 20 years ago and have really done well in the area. There has been little to no pressure on the birds here and it is not uncommon to see 30 to 40 almost every time you ride through the property. We have several photos of some really nice gobblers and several bearded hens.
There are small game and predators on this tract as well. The landowner planted several acres of sunflowers this season and had great success on the early dove season. The sunflower fields have now resprouted and will be flooded and providing more food for the waterfowl. There are still a few quail and rabbits on the property and we have seen and heard several coveys of birds in the past few weeks. There are a few coyotes and bobcats on the property also and the landowner tries to keep them in check as well.
There is a beautiful lodge that comes with this property. It has over 2000 square feet and will accommodate several hunters.
